Photographing Pro G: Golf Photography in Low Light

As a photographer, I love shooting golf courses and greenkeepers at all times of day. From the first light of sunrise to the last few minutes before sunset, working in challenging light is all part of the job. But what happens when there's barely any natural light at all?

I recently put that experience to the test on a very different kind of golf photography project at Pro G in Kidlington, Oxfordshire.

Founders Graham and Maureen invited me to photograph their fantastic new indoor golf facility ahead of its launch, creating a bank of images to help showcase the venue and support their marketing campaigns. The challenge? Capturing the atmosphere, detail and quality of the simulator rooms when natural light was in short supply.

Indoor golf in Kidlington, with simulators and PuttView

With three golf simulators, including a dedicated VIP and corporate area, plus a brilliant PuttView putting experience, Pro G offers something for golfers of all abilities.

Golf lessons and first swings

My shoot covered both ends of the golfing spectrum. Local golf professional Jai McGill will be offering lessons at the venue, while a group of complete beginners had a go at golf for the first time. It was great to capture both the technical side of the game and the fun, social experience that indoor golf can offer.

With Sky Sports, a bar, snacks and comfortable sofas, Pro G looks set to become a welcoming hangout for golfers across Oxfordshire, whether you're working on your game, enjoying a session with friends or organising a corporate get-together.

Photography for a new golf venue

When you're launching a new venue, your photography has a big job to do. Potential customers need to see more than a simulator and a golf club. They need to imagine themselves there: playing with friends, improving their swing, enjoying a drink or bringing colleagues together.

That means capturing the atmosphere as well as the facilities, and making sure the images work across websites, social media and marketing campaigns. It's something I love about commercial golf photography: every venue has its own story to tell.

Ollie is hands down one of the best in his field. He recently came out to our new Pro G golf venue and from start to finish, the entire experience was amazing. His creative vision, unique ideas, and the final photos have absolutely blown us away. He perfectly captured the golf simulator experience and exceeded all of our expectations. Thank you, Ollie!
